Everything you need to know about Chrome Capture and Reelia screen recording extensions

Getting Started

Chrome Capture is a powerful Chrome browser extension that allows users to capture screenshots and record screen activity directly within the browser. It supports full-page capture, selected areas, desktop recording, and can save as images, GIFs, or videos (MP4/WebM).

Reelia is a free Chrome extension for recording videos or webcasts of anything displayed on your screen, without requiring sign-up. It includes a built-in video library and editor, offering similar features to paid extensions like Loom and Screencastify, but completely free.

Visit the Chrome Web Store and search for "Chrome Capture". Click the "Add to Chrome" button to install it. The extension icon will appear in your browser toolbar, ready to use immediately.

Yes! Chrome Capture offers a free plan with unlimited screenshots, basic GIF recording (up to 15 seconds), and basic editing tools. Premium plans unlock HD recording, unlimited GIF length, advanced editing, and 4K+ recording for Premium Pro users.

Features & Capabilities

Chrome Capture allows you to capture: full web pages, selected areas, full screen/desktop, and individual apps. You can save captures as images (PNG/JPG), animated GIFs, or videos (MP4/WebM).

Yes! Chrome Capture includes annotation tools to add text, arrows, shapes, highlights, and other annotations to your screenshots or recordings before saving or sharing them.

Chrome Capture supports MP4 and WebM video formats for screen recordings. For animated content, you can also export as GIF. Premium users get access to higher quality encoding options and advanced export settings.

Chrome Capture supports system audio recording, which is perfect for capturing video playback, presentations, and other on-screen audio. For recordings that require microphone input (like tutorials or voiceovers), use Reelia, which supports both system audio and microphone input simultaneously.

Technical Questions

GIFs are limited to a maximum of 256 colors, significantly fewer than the millions of colors supported by videos. This limitation results in reduced color depth and fidelity. For high-quality recordings, use video formats (MP4/WebM) instead of GIF.

Dithering is a technique that simulates colors and gradients not available in GIF's limited 256-color palette. It introduces patterns of varying pixel colors to create the illusion of additional shades and smoother transitions. Chrome Capture uses dithering to improve GIF visual quality, especially for gradients and subtle color variations.

Selected area capture may not work on certain pages due to security restrictions imposed by Google. These restrictions prevent extensions from accessing or modifying specific browser pages (new tab, Chrome Web Store, chrome:// pages) for security and privacy reasons. Use full screen capture as an alternative on these pages.

Chrome Capture is designed for Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi). It requires Chrome version 88 or higher for optimal performance.

Pricing & Plans

Free: Unlimited screenshots, basic GIF recording (15s limit), basic editing. Premium: HD recording (1080p, 24fps), unlimited GIF length, advanced editing, high-quality compression. Premium Pro: 4K+ recording (30fps), advanced effects, early access to features, priority support.

The 15-second limit helps maintain optimal performance and file sizes. GIFs aren't optimized for longer durations - larger files lead to slower loading times. For longer recordings, consider upgrading to Premium or use Reelia for unlimited free video recording.

Premium starts at $2/month (billed annually) or $4/month (billed monthly). Premium Pro is $1.25/month (annual) or $6/month (monthly). All plans include a 7-day free trial.

Yes! You can cancel your Premium subscription at any time. You'll continue to have access to Premium features until the end of your current billing period.

Troubleshooting

If you're already a Premium user but see the purchase prompt, it may be a temporary authentication issue. Ensure you're signed in with the correct account. Try signing in again via the "sign in here" link on the purchase dialog to re-authenticate your Premium status.

Laggy recordings are often caused by high CPU usage. Try: closing unnecessary browser tabs, reducing recording quality/frame rate, disabling other extensions temporarily, or upgrading to Premium for better encoding performance.

Visit the Chrome Web Store page and use the "Support" tab to report bugs or request features. Premium Pro users get priority support and their feature requests are prioritized.
